* This month’s guest speaker is Alan Studley. Alan is a well known local diver and photographer. He has been in the adventure travel and diving industry since 1978. At the beginning of Alan’s career, he was a SCUBA trainer certified for all levels of Scuba. Scuba diving all over the world, Alan has been able to build his library of photographs and video, while building a strong foundation and reputation in the photography industry. Many of his photographs and videos have been published in international and domestic dive industry-related syndications ,including magazines, Travel brochures, Dive equipment brochures, Fish I.D. books, Otter books, CDs, Film Festivals, and Television.

May 12-13, 2012 Santa Clara Dive & Travel Expo

Santa Clara Dive & Travel Expo 2012 at the Santa Clara Convention Center on May 12-13, 2012. 1st annual diving event focuses on scuba diving and the scuba diving industry. This year’s event will host 50+ free seminars on everything from underwater photography to first aid with DAN. There will also be 140+ exciting exhibit booths to explore. Vendors from all over the world will be available to answer questions as well as introduce divers to the latest in scuba diving. All admissions paid by women will be donated to “Dive for a Cure“.

Abalone Season

The California Department of Fish and Game has posted regulations effective March 1,, 2012 for the upcoming abalone season. The regulations come down to this: The taking of red abalone is closed in the area for Fort Ross Reef (Fort Ross State Park) from December to May and for the month of July.

EXCERPT FROM THE DFG REGULATIONS

29.15. ABALONE.
(a) Geographical Area: Abalone may only be taken north of a line drawn due west magnetic from the center of the mouth of San Francisco Bay. No abalone may be taken, landed, or possessed if landed south of this line. Click here is a link to the closure map.

(b) Open Season and Hours:
(1) Open Season: In the Fort Ross area bounded by the mean high tide line and a line drawn due south true from 38°30.63’ N, 123°14.98’ W (the northern point of Fort Ross Cove) and a line drawn due west true from 38°29.45’ N, 123°11.72’ W (Jewel Gulch, south boundary Fort Ross State Park) abalone may only be taken during the months of June, August, September, October and November. In the remainder of the geographic area defined in subsection (a) above, abalone may be taken only during the months of April, May, June, August, September, October and November.

Sport fishing regulations pertaining to red abalone may be found in the current Ocean Sport Fishing regulations booklet, available wherever sport fishing licenses are sold, at your local Department office, and online at www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations.

April 21, 2012: Whale watching. Location, time and cost TBD within the next week.

June 15,16, 17, 2012: NVD Abalone Campout to be held at either Salt Point State Park or Ocean Cove Campground. Come camp with us or come up for a day. Location TBD.

Monterey diving is in the planning stages.

NVD Annual Holiday Party

The Napa Valley Divers annual Holiday Party and Ornament Exchange was an incredible success on December 12, 2011. In place of our normal monthly meeting, we gathered at Gigi’s home where we had a exciting social time, followed by a catered tri-tip dinner, and then had the much anticipated ornament exchange. Many of our members were in attendance as well as several welcomed guests. If you missed this festive event, I hope you attend next years party!!

As the club states, “We are a fun-loving group of people who have a passion for diving and traveling. We desire to stay connected and socialize outside of dive activities. The goals of the group are to provide a place for divers and their families to socialize, plan recreational activities, plan dive trips, promote continued communication among members, and to provide a forum of keeping keen on dive skills and the dive industry.”

NVD November 14, 2011 Club Meeting

Come join us at the next NVD club meeting for a very interesting speaker! Our guest speaker will be, Dave Kendall, who is a member of the State of California, Caltrans “Structures Maintenance and Inspections Dive Team”. Federal law requires that bridges be inspected every five years, and this elite team of commercial divers and engineers inspect the underwater sections of 150 California bridges per year. Dave has been diving for 20 years, teaching for 15 years, performing underwater inspections for 11 years, and dove for Solano County Search and Recovery for several years.

The next Napa Valley Divers monthly club meeting will be on November 14, 2011, at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, 645 1st Street, Napa, 707-254-9700. Dinner (Dutch Treat) begins at 6:00pm and the club meeting will start at 7:00pm.

Monterey Underwater Shootout September 9-11, 2011

Monterey Shootout and Underwater Film Festival. September 9-11, 2011.

Dive into the magic of underwater film making and photography in this special evening showcase at the Golden State Theater. Go behind the scenes with underwater filmmakers from Canon Explorers of Light, BBC, National Geographic, and independent filmmakers as they share clips and images of their life below the waves. Entry included with full weekend registrants. Film festival only tickets are available for $5 in advance or $10 at the door.

Abalone Campout Update August 26-28, 2011

Good friends with great fellowship. Incredible and abundant food – including four different abalone dishes on Saturday evenings potluck. Sunshine including some sunburns. Fun times. Decent ocean conditions. 29 abalone taken for the weekend. Life does not get much better!!! That summarizes the abalone campout at Ocean Cove Campground on August 26-28, 2011. Vis was low, so we canceled the dive at Gerstle Cove Preserve. Club members and non-members came for one night, both nights or just for the day on Saturday. Everyone was welcome, and everyone is looking forward to the next trip! A big thank you to Ken and Teresa L. for the incredible job they did to organize this trip and to provide the boat for Saturday’s diving adventures.

Napa Valley Divers to Meet at IGUANA BOB’S Dive Center on September 12th

The September 12, 2011 Napa Valley Divers dive club meeting will be held at IGUANA BOB’S DIVE CENTER 3387 Solano Ave, Napa (707-252-1219). Bring something to share at the potluck at 6:00 PM; the meeting will start at 7:00. Jon Hayes from Oceanic will be the guest speaker.
