Abalone and Camping Trip – August 13-15, 2010

Unfortunately, this event has been canceled, as of July 24, 2010.  Watch for a new trip.

To All Napa Valley Divers:

Fellow Divers and Club Members Keith and Pam Reuter (and Ty, Pam’s 100 pound, very friendly Yellow Lab) will be camping and abalone diving at Salt Point State Park from Friday, August 13 to Sunday August 15, 2010 and would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested to come and join them.  Salt Point State Park is situated above Jenner and below Sea Ranch, and these dates have some very nice low tides, but as always, weather and ocean conditions may not cooperate.  Keith has been diving at Salt Point for ten years and “typically” comes out (if conditions allow) with his daily limit of 7″- 8″ abalone. (pristine conditions provide access to the 8″- 9″ abalone)

Salt Point Gerstle Cove is a protected “Marine Reserve” for SCUBA diving and South Gerstle Cove offers good abalone diving.  There are various other abalone dive sites along the coast nearby, including several “safer, protected” areas.  Ocean Cove Campground, just south of Salt Point, has a campground and “fee” boat launch site.

Keith and Pam are staying in the Salt Point “Woodside” loop.  Reservations are non-specific, which means you get was is left when you arrive.  They will be staying in the upper loop if available, and will resort to the lower loop if needed.  Salt Point limits RV or Trailers to 31 feet, but when specifically asked at the check in station, the rangers have stated (in the past) that length is not important as long as you don’t extend out off your site onto the street.

Keith and Pam will assist club members in organization of abalone diving, pot luck dinners (hopefully with abalone) and fellowship.

  • To SCUBA:  Bring full cold water gear, weights and tanks.  Air fills may be as far away as Jenner.
  • To abalone dive:  Bring a CA ocean fishing license with abalone card (there are very, very specific requirements for tagging your abalone), full cold water gear (less BC – abalone diving is free diving without tanks), weight belt with weights, abalone iron and gauge, and a float (highly recommended).

It is reccomended that you obtain your reservation as soon as possible at ReserveAmarica.  Camping (No Hookups) is $35.00 per night with an $8.00 convenience fee per reservation.   As of 6/10/10 there were 28 remaining campsites available.  If you book reservations for the camping trip, please let Keith know you are going.

stockJennifer will be giving a presentation on the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary located just 6 miles west of the Point Reyes Lighthouse. The Sanctuary’s main feature is Cordell Bank, an underwater granitic mountain sitting on top of the seafloor. The Bank itself is an oasis for hundreds of species of invertebrates and fishes. The productive waters that surround and move around Cordell Bank are foraging waters for highly migratory species like albatrosses, shearwaters, humpback, and blue whales. Learn about this hidden mysterious environment and take a peek at what scientists see through the porthole of a submersible.

Jennifer is currently the Education and Outreach Coordinator for NOAA’s Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Jennifer has worked in the field of environmental education for over 13 years. She worked as an interpretive park ranger with the Assateague Island National Seashore and Fire Island National Seashore. During her environmental education years, she worked at Guided Discoveries: Catalina Island Marine Institute and locally at the Headlands Institute. Jennifer loves showing people what they can’t see with their bare eyes and delights in bringing the mysterious underwater world to learners of all ages. Jennifer has a bachelors degree in biology from the University of Delaware and is currently working on a Masters degree in Education at Dominican University in 2008/2009.

Movie Night Review

Hello Napa Valley Divers!

Movie Night Under the Stars was a smashing success! All those in attendance gathered a little early to sip on a beverage of choice and to share some appetizers. As you moved from conversation to conversation you heard tales of the recent trip to Utila, the urban dive legends of Michael G., and the normal party conversations of family, friends and of course politics! At dusk everyone gathered bowls of popcorn, settled in under blankets and watched “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”. A very strange film to be sure. For anyone who has seen it, you should know that our own Ray P. donned the Red Knit Hat worn in the movie and looked scarily a lot like Bill Murray.  Also all will be happy to know that Ray left the “speedo” at home! All and all it was beautiful night under the stars and so comfortable in Jackie’s backyard.  Thanks Jackie!

Our next big event is the Monterey Bay Picnic. The date has not been finalized, so keep an eye out for an e-mail or check the events page for more information.

See you at our next meeting on Monday, August 10th.

Chef’s Market; Where Divers, Prospects, Club, and Dive Shop Come Together!

chefsmarket

All and all we feel we had a successful evening at Chef’s market – our goal is to let current divers know about our club and to be available to talk to people who are interested in becoming divers… we did get both!

It was great fun talking to everyone and we passed out many dive club membership pamphlets as well as Open Water flyers for Napa Dive Center.

We even got an offer to work on an article with Napa Valley Life Magazine and a possible radio interview with Bob and Kellie on the Vine… details are not finalized, but I will be meeting with them next week to discuss the opportunity! Super exciting!

Special thanks to Christine, Nancy, Joan, Jayma, Steve, Johann, Peter, and Sarah for coming out to support the efforts! Thanks again to Roger for donating the cost of our booth! This summer is shaping up to be the most exciting yet!

Jackie

Here’s what’s happening…

It’s time to elect your new Board of Directors! That’s right! We will be holding elections at this April club meeting. Be there and make your vote count!

Here are the incumbent:

  • Jayma Claus – President
  • Roger Haseltine – Past President
  • Mike Quinn – Vice President
  • Joan Lord – Secretary
  • Christine Jameson – Treasurer
  • David Topper – Communications
  • Open – Activities Director

Here’s who has been nominated (and agreed to serve should they be elected):

  • Jackie Danielsson – President
  • Jayma Claus – Past President
  • Mike Quinn – Vice President
  • Open – Secretary
  • Christine Jameson – Treasurer
  • Open – Communications
  • Joan Lord – Activities Director

A few notes: We need someone to step forward and serve as Secretary and yet another to step forward for Communications. Please condider supporting all Napa Valley Divers in these key rolls. Serving on the Board is an exciting and rewarding experience. Minimal time and effort yield great results.

I (David Topper) have agreed to continue as Webmaster but will not seek a third term on the Board; Should Joan Lord be elected as Activities Director, Theresa Haseltine and Colleen Topper have both agreed to support Joan with Activities planning and management but only Joan would have a seat on the Board.

On another note: The Napa Dive Center “Coffee Klatch” is held every Monday morning from 11am-1pm. Coffee drinkers (or actually anyone else) are welcome. You’ll be able to see the “new-temporary” dive center. No need to bring your own mugs as they have plenty of coffee mugs for everyone. Call for directions: 257.2822

We look forward to seeing you all at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto!
