April 2014 NVD Abalone Campout

by kreuter on April 9, 2014

After a week of almost non-stop rain, undaunted Napa Valley (abalone) Divers had their first abalone campout of the year at Ocean Cove Campground on April 4-6, 2014.  Almost on command, the rain stopped at 5:30pm on Friday, as old friends and new friends arrived, and it turned out to be an incredible weekend.  As the weekend went by, the weather went from sunny and windy, to “great weather”, to “stellar” conditions.  Unpredictable ocean conditions prevented the inflatable boat from going out, but two days of beach diving produced 11 abalone and 1 perch with 8 ft of viz, between 8 campers and 3 puppies, including one brand new abalone diver who produced 4 of the abalone. The largest abalone was a 9 incher, found by Ken.

The potluck on Saturday night was plentiful with not only traditionally cooked abalone, but also included Sonya’s famous “Ab Cakes”, that were the hit of the meal.  Reluctantly, everyone left around 2:30 on Sunday afternoon, after a last adventure of shell and driftwood collecting.

Watch for the next campout coming soon!
