Alert Diver magazine is looking for stories from Scuba Divers

The publishers of Alert Diver magazine, DAN’s internal publication for divers, are looking for YOUR stories.  One of the key elements of the magazine’s redesign last fall was the development of several columns that allow divers to submit and share their stories and advice with other divers.  Each of these columns has proven to be popular, and the publishers of Alert Diver want to invite all readers of the magazine to share their stories in the coming year.

So tell us, do you have a tale to tell?

  • DAN Was There for Me – This column focuses on real-life emergencies in which DAN played a key role in the outcome.  Has DAN been there for you?  Tell us about it at  ThereForMe@dan.org.
  • Scuba 911 – Have you ever had to put your DAN training to good use?  Tell us how you used skills learned in a DAN course to save yourself or someone else – even if you applied them in a non-diving situation.  Write to Scuba911@dan.org.
  • Member to Member – This is a chance for divers to speak directly to other divers about matters important to them.  The column shares everything from consumer tips, travel strategies, dive techniques, fitness matters, personal experiences and lessons learned.  If you have something to say to divers, tell us about it at m2m@dan.org.

Of course, thoughts, suggestions, feedback and story ideas are welcome for any column or feature of the magazine.  But these columns were designed specifically for divers to share their stories, and we want to hear every one of them.

So don’t be shy – tell Alert Diver your story!

To check out past columns, read them on AlertDiver.com.

Update on Dan R.

Dan is home and doing well after two spinal surgeries and he is able to walk – he is on the mend both physically and within his heart with the loss of his Mom as well.  He thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers, cards and flowers.

No Plastic Day – June 8, 2010

Participate in No Plastic Day

No Plastic Day is a world wide event intended to bring awareness of the over consumption of disposable plastic goods such as plastic bags and bottles.  It is well known that there are floating islands of trash in most of the world’s oceans.  The huge amounts of plastic trash we all discard daily doesn’t decompose, doesn’t break down, and most of it is toxic to the animals that accidentally consume it.  The current rate of plastic consumption is not sustainable and is starting to create a huge problem for marine life particularly.  Fish eat toxic plastic bits.  We catch the fish and eat the fish.  Its only a matter of time before we’ve polluted our own food supplies with plastic trash.

What you can do on No Plastic Day

  • No plastic bags – If you buy something from a store on No Plastic Day, bring your own bags.  If you don’t have any cloth or paper bags, just reuse the plastic bags you already have.  They’ll never biodegrade so you might as well reuse them if you already have them.
  • No plastic bottles – Drink water from the tap or buy drinks in aluminum cans or glass bottles if you must.
  • Limit your garbage – Almost everything you throw away is made of plastic.  By limiting the garbage you create, you will reduce your plastic waste as well.
  • Be creative- Everyone’s situation is different and you will need to customize your own situation for No Plastic Day.  Be creative.  Reuse, recycle, and reduce your waste.  Consider it a personal experiment to find ways you can create less garbage and try to use no disposable plastics.

Lake Barryessa Cleanup

Coastal Cleanup (Lake Berryessa) – Saturday  September 25th

Roger and Jackie will be leading the charge this year for the Coastal Cleanup; which for us equates to the Lake Berryessa Cleanup!  We will be teaming up with Sports Cove, Berryessa Trails and Conservation, and others this year and we plan on making this the best cleanup yet! (Along with the best BBQ as a special thank you to our volunteers!).

As always we need donations of wine and items for the raffle along with, food, drinks (sodas, water, etc) bbq accessories, boats, clean up supplies, money and your time!

Please RSVP to Jackie at: jackiedanielsson@comcast.net and be sure to include your contact information, the number of volunteers in your group, and the capacity in which you can volunteer!

See you all soon!  Jackie

Sea Turtle Restoration Project

Join Sea Turtle Restoration Project and the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to help endangered leatherback sea turtles by removing plastic litter and debris from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, California.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to help save sea turtles on the morning of World Turtle Day, May 23, 10:00am – 12:00 noon. Beach cleanup volunteers are meeting at North Ocean Beach, 1000 Great Highway, San Francisco (Stairway 17, map).

Each year several hundred endangered western Pacific leatherbacks migrate over 6,000 miles to feed on hundreds of pounds of jellyfish a day offshore of California. The waters off of San Francisco are especially popular with leatherbacks!  Ingestion of plastic bags and debris is known to kill leatherbacks all over the world, so let’s keep any and all plastic trash from entering their favorite ocean feeding environments.

Receive a FREE re-usable water bottle from the Sea Turtle Restoration Project
!

Join as a member at our table, or bring proof of current membership (like your newsletter), and help with the beach cleanup to receive your free water bottle. Then eliminate your future use of disposable plastic water bottles, which pollute the ocean and waste energy. Or, if you can’t attend, click here to join as a member now!

See you at Ocean Beach,

Chris Pincetich, Campaigner & Marine Biologist, Sea Turtle Restoration Project
